Flashlight under chin,

his face is a ghost

and at such a young age.

Twelve he is,

standing in a neighbor’s driveway.

A curtain drawn,

an old lady, face against glass,

lets out a scream

loud enough to shatter birds.

But it’s night.

There are no birds.

A nearby bat explodes instead.
